The Living
by Chris Andrew

Philadelphia, Pennsylvannia

There’s magic in it,
the enterprise of living, life.
Tide in, tide out,
there’s magic in it, in us,
for the living are over seas,
the living are overjoyed—-or perfectly joyed—
and the living adjust, adapt, keep records of their flight.

In this life, foraging is not the same as wanting,
wanting is not the same as being, and being is not the same as seeing.
The tide comes in, the tide goes out,
but the rocks don’t wear before us,
Events like that are hidden in time—out of our time—
and yet we know they happen (and that is the enterprise of living).
We live, we happen—
not in the same time, barely in the same space—
and we are all flying, wanting, foraging, feeding.

Do you recall the joy of being fed?
That is the enterprise of living, the magic of living,
the magic of wanting,
like any lighthouse is a true calling.
